How Dental And General Health Affect One Another

Pregnancy Problems. Those who have gum disease while they are pregnant are three times more likely to have a premature baby or baby with a low birth weight. Several pregnancy tests research says it is evident that gum disease can raise the level of chemicals that brings on labor.

Oral Mucosal Lesions. Like diabetes, those with HIV/AIDS have a weakened immune system that increases the risk of oral health problems. A problem typical to HIV/AIDS is the development of painful mucosal lesions in the mouth.

Bacterial Chest Infections. These infections can be caused by breathing in fine droplets of water which can lead to bacteria growth. Gum disease means that there are more bacteria in the mouth which increases the risk of getting a lung infection.

Osteoporosis. This bone loss disease has been linked to tooth loss and periodontal bone loss.

Alzheimer’s Disease. Believe it or not, tooth loss before the age of 35 has been named a risk factor for Alzheimer’s Disease when one is older.

Sjogren’s Syndrome. This is a condition caused by the immune system which dries out the mouth, making it more susceptible to tooth decay and gum disease. Sjogren’s syndrome has been linked with eating disorders.
