At Smiles in Shelby, we are pleased to provide a variety of high-quality periodontal treatments to prevent and repair damage caused by a number of gum conditions. The most common condition we see at our office is gum disease. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is the inflammation and infection of your gums and soft tissues. We use dental lasers to aid in scaling and root planing, treatments that are designed to remove infected gum tissue and smooth the surface of your teeth where bacteria can get trapped. The severity of your case will determine which type of treatment we suggest.

The causes of Periodontitis

The main contributors to gum disease are bacteria that live in plaque and periodontal pockets. Risk factors for developing periodontitis include poor oral hygiene, stress, certain medications, smoking, and genetic factors.

Symptoms that may indicate the presence of periodontitis include:

  • Bleeding, pain, swollen gums
  • Increased mobility of the teeth
  • Unpleasant odor from the mouth
  • Changed position of your teeth
  • The impression that your tooth crowns have become longer

How to treat Periodontitis?

The main goal of periodontal treatment is to eliminate inflammation and shallow periodontal pockets. Treatment may be carried out in three phases:

1. Hygiene and Education
In the initial phase, professional teeth cleaning is often carried out to control the plaque buildup. This is also the time for patient education in regards to smoking cessation, oral hygiene, and dietary recommendations.

2. Nonsurgical Treatment
The corrective phase begins with the non-surgical periodontal treatment. It consists of removing the subgingival plaque and tartar and polishing the roots’ surface through scaling. Surgical procedures are performed in patients who still have deep pockets after nonsurgical treatment.

If everything goes well, your gums should heal in no time and reattach to your clean and healthy teeth.

3. Periodontal Surgery
If scaling and root planing, the noninvasive methods restoring your gum’s health, require additional treatment, Smiles in Shelby may suggest a few options, including pocket reduction surgery, gum or bone grafting.

4. Maintenance Phase
The last stage of periodontal treatment is aimed at maintaining the obtained results through previous therapies. It includes systemic periodontal checks and proper oral hygiene.

How to Prevent Gum Disease?

The most effective method of periodontal prevention consists of maintaining impeccable oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups. What can you do to avoid periodontal disease?

Brushing your teeth after each meal ensures effective removal of food debris from between the teeth and their surface. Toothbrushes with medium-hard bristles provide the most effective removal of plaque without irritating the gums. The optimal technique for brushing teeth is the so-called “roll” method, where the brush is placed on the gum at a 45-degree angle with the bristles directed towards the tops of the roots. Use a rotating and sweeping motion when brushing the crowns of your teeth. That way, you can clean the gingival area, where usually most plaque accumulates and where gum inflammation begins. The chewing surfaces of the teeth can be brushed with a scrubbing motion.

Sonic brushes are also highly recommended, as the emitted sound waves effectively detach the bacterial biofilm from the surface of your teeth. These brushes ensure thorough cleaning and additionally massage your gums.

Patients prone to gum disease may benefit from toothpaste or mouthwash with the addition of chlorhexidine, which has antibacterial properties. Since the bacteria that cause gingivitis and periodontitis are also present on the tongue, cleansing it should be a regular part of your oral hygiene.

You may opt for special tongue brushes and cleaners (scrapers) designed for this purpose. The systematic cleaning of your tongue is also an essential part of the treatment and prevention of bad breath.
