How Does a Root Canal Work?

Root Canal

Have you been asked to get a root canal? Are you intimidated by the procedure? That is probably because of your lack of information on the topic. We can help you with that. Here is all that you need to know:

Root canals are emergency care procedures that remove the infection from your tooth in the process of saving it. The procedure is done by a dentist and is the best treatment for infected teeth. In an infected tooth, it is mostly the pulp that is infected alone. This is why in root canals, the extraction of the pulp is the prime focus. The nerve endings that surround the pulp of your teeth are also susceptible to infection and it is best to remove them as well. In a root canal, both the pulp and the nerve endings are extracted, keeping the tooth intact.

When the nerve endings are damaged because of the infection, the pain becomes unbearable. The nerve endings can also be damaged if you consistently have dental procedures on your teeth. Since the enamel is the shield of your teeth, the constant procedures weaken it and that further weakens the pulp inside. Pulp infection is not the only reason people come to get a root canal. It is possible that they had an accident and the tooth got severely damaged, root canals are also a possibility in such cases.

Do You Need A Root Canal?

If you were not in an accident, how do you know that you need a root canal? What are the obvious symptoms that should make you rush to the doctor? Well, if you experience increased insensitivity in your tooth and it gradually becomes too difficult to handle. Take it as a sign and book yourself a dentist’s appointment.

Hypersensitivity is detected when you eat food that are of extreme temperatures. The nerve endings feel the intense temperature and you can then experience hypersensitivity. In other cases, patients have complained of experiencing swelling in their gums and jaws. There have also been cases reported where patients had decaying gums. The gums get dark as the infection starts to infect them. It is high time that you get an appointment with your dentist.

The Complete Procedure

Root canals are mostly feared by people. They are thought to be very invasive and dangerous. However, the procedure is anything but invasive. It is typically a routine procedure as several get done every year. The surgery is performed by an endodontist who is a dentist with a specialization in root canal surgery. They have extensive knowledge on the pulp and the matters of pulp infection. They can easily perform this procedure as they are trained and have several years of experience. To help you understand what you can expect from the procedure, we have listed it all below:

X-ray

The first thing that needs to be done is an x-ray of the infected tooth. This will help your dentist look at the extent of damage to your teeth.

Pre Surgery Preparation

Once the dentist understands the main areas of damage they will put you on local anesthesia so that it numbs your mouth. A rubber sheet is kept in your mouth around the teeth so that your mouth does not get too dry or that you will be uncomfortable

Pulp Extraction

Now the main extraction begins. Your tooth is drilled and the hole made with it is then used to extract the pulp. The pulp along with the nerve tissue is pulled out.

Internal Cleaning

As soon as the pulp is extracted the tooth is cleaned out. Root canal files are used to clean your tooth. After the cleaning is complete your tooth will be flushed out with sodium hypochlorite. This is done to ensure that the tooth is absolutely clean and nothing is left inside.

Sealing

Once the cleaning is completed the tooth is then prepared to be sealed. The sealing is either done right after the cleaning or the doctors wait for a week before they seal your teeth. During that one week, dentists monitor any infections that might take place. After that, the tooth is sealed properly.

Filling

Since the dentists drilled a hole in your tooth, it is important to fill it. Dentists fill out your tooth by adding a paste called Gutta Percha. It is made of rubber and fills up the hole nicely.

Crown Placement

A metal crown is placed atop your tooth to protect it from any damages in the future. This protection helps the tooth from getting re-infected.

Post Treatment Care

Most dentists advise little to no aftercare. All they might ask you to do is take care of your dental health by ensuring dental care. After you are done with the procedure, you might face a little bit of discomfort. That is because you might still have inflammation surrounding your tooth.

If you have any dentist appointments in the near future, do not miss them. They can help you ensure that everything is exactly how it is supposed to be.

Do not be terrified of the procedure itself. It is very easy for the dentist to do and you to look after. All that you must make sure of is that you make the right decision when selecting a dentist. Not all dentists are good and can take care of your dental needs.
