If you have experienced moderate to severe tooth decay, our dental team at Smiles in Shelby may suggest a same-day crown to restore the function, shape, and size of your tooth. Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps that completely encase a tooth up to the gum line. In the past, it required many appointments and messy impressions to make your dental crown. Thanks to advances in modern technology, we can now design, create, and place your dental crown in just a single visit to our office. With Cerec OmniCam same-day crown technology, we can also make our patients’ high-quality porcelain crowns in just one appointment.

What are the indications for a porcelain Dental Crown?

There are many advantages to porcelain crowns when compared to the materials used in the past. Porcelain is aesthetically pleasing and can be matched to the natural color of your smile.

It is also exceptionally strong, providing a long-lasting dental restoration. Porcelain crowns keep your smile safe, healthy, and beautiful. We may suggest a porcelain crown as our choice of dental crowns in Shelby Township, Michigan, to:

  • Support a large filling or root canal treatment
  • Prevent a tooth from breaking
  • Hold a cracked tooth together
  • Anchor a dental bridge
  • Complete a dental implant treatment
  • Aesthetic tooth reconstruction

Crowns are also a method offered by cosmetic dentistry and orthodontic correction of teeth, such as crooked, permanently discolored teeth, or problems with enamel. Prosthetic crowns should be considered the last resort solution when there is no other way to improve the condition of your teeth. In the absence of a tooth, crowns can be mounted on various types of implants.

What are the benefits of a porcelain Dental Crown?

The advantage of using porcelain crowns is that they are permanently attached and should be treated just like your natural teeth. Comparing to removable dentures, porcelain crowns cannot be removed and do not fall out.

A porcelain crown can be used on the roots of real teeth whose natural crown has been damaged – complete fracture or extensive damage due to tooth decay. It is rare that tooth wear is so severe that it requires a new crown.

Porcelain crowns are also a way of faster orthodontic treatment if there are defects in the bite structure that can be corrected by treating several teeth. If a crown is attached to a natural tooth, the root canal treatment is required.

What to expect during the procedure?

If the tooth is healthy and qualifies for the procedure, a porcelain crown can be mounted on its remains. When filed, the crown is cemented to the natural tooth, matching the color of the remaining teeth.

In order to replace one tooth, a crown can be placed on implants – artificial tooth roots in the form of a screw embedded in the jaw bone. First, a special connector is tightened to the implant, and then the crown can be installed.

Prosthetic bridges are used to replace a large number of missing teeth. The bridge is made of several interconnected crowns mounted on pillars (or implants) surrounding the gap, such as the lack of a tooth.

How to take care of a Porcelain Crown?

A porcelain crown should be treated in practically the same way as you would your natural teeth. Regular cleaning with a soft or medium bristle toothbrush and the use of low-abrasive toothpaste is essential. You should pay special attention when brushing the area of the porcelain crown transition to the tooth root, right next to the gum. This is the area that is most prone to plaque build-up. It is also important to observe the level, or position, of your gums after placing a porcelain crown because its lowering may affect the aesthetics of the treatment.

It is also recommended to floss the spaces between the teeth daily and use non-alcoholic mouthwashes. Routine six-month check-ups will allow us to quickly take necessary action in the event of minor damage to the tooth crown.
